Rainwater Harvesting

 Rainwater harvesting is a great way to utilise the British weather and it's easier than you think...

What's more, by fitting a filter to your system you can literally have free drinking water on tap.  And this is just one use!

We know that installing a waterbutt underground is extremely costly- draining your time and your money.  Instead you can keep the butt above ground putting it in your shed or even making a feature of it.

Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater Harvesting- How it works

Rain water can be collected by using the roof (and only the roof) as a collector of rainwater.  The water then goes into a tank (traditionally underground but more cost effective and flexible if you have it overground).  A pump is attached to the system.  The collected water can then be used for the garden hose supply, flushing toilets and washing machines.

  • You can even make the water drinkable by attaching one of our filters- giving you free drinking water on tap.  We can remedy any water problems making it healthy and taste good.
    We've been treating well water for many years and realised that treating your rainwater is no different.

As the population grows and water reserves decline, the need for rainwater harvesting systems becomes evermore important, as these systems replace water usage in a safe and convenient way.

Rainwater Harvesting- Ticked Boxes

  • Become more self sustaining- no longer be held ransom to changing water prices and always have that water on standby to use when you need it;
  • Save up to 50% on your water bills- average households reduce their mains water consumption by up to 50%;
  • Have the system fit in around you- tailor you rainwater harvesting system by size, position and even colour.  Systems come in various forms including, direct feed to house, high water table system and a developer pack system. This variation allows for systems to be incorporated into many locations;
  • Reduces the impact on the environment- use the same amount of water with half the amound of guilt;
  • Make your house more efficient- complies with the Code For Sustainable Homes and counts towards 9% of the overall target.

RainWater Harvesting Tank Size Calculator

In order to establish the required tank size for your rainwater harvesting system, please follow the below instructions that will guide you through the tank size calculator tool.

However If you need any further help please contact us on 020 8539 4707

1.  Please click the icon to download the Excel spreadsheet
2.  Insert your home's measurements, in metres, in the yellow boxes. Try to estimate the dimensions of that part of the house from which you will be collecting rain water.
3.  Refer to the table on the "Rainfall" Tab and find out the average annual rainfall in centimetres in your part of the country. Then simply type this in the 3rd yellow box; e.g., if you live in East Anglia, the driest part of the country, use 63.
4.  Insert in the red box the number of days drought protection you would like from your rainwater harvesting system. You can change the number of weeks at will to see what impact it has on the tank size you need.
5.  The results of the calculations are shown in the three light blue boxes:
  5.1. The first blue box shows the amount of water you need to protect your home use and garden from drought.
  5.2. The 2nd blue box shows YES if your roof is big enough to provide the water you need to fill the tank!
  5.3. The 3rd blue box shows the tank size we would recommend.

Rainwater Harvesting- How we've done ours

What we've done in our house is....

  • Install a waterbutt at ground level to save all the digging costs of having it underground;
  • This way the system is easier to maintain too;
  • Our waterbutt is in our shed but there are so many waterbutts to choose from- you can have virtually any colour and style you want;
  • We've attached a pump and hose to ours so we can water the garden;
  • We're in the middle of fitting a water filter to it so that we can have free drinking water.

Rainwater Harvesting- Uses for your rainwater

Rainwater is free so we think that we might as well take advantage of it. There are so many ways you can use your rainwater. Here are just a few so you can get some ideas.

- Drinking water- just put a filter on and have clean, healthy drinking water on tap and free!
- Fish ponds- we know that cleaning and filling up fishponds uses a lot of water. You can even filter the water first for those prize fish...
- Washing- from you to your clothes to the car. It all takes a lot of water so cut down those expensive bills by using rainwater
- Flushing the loo- we all know that this take take up to litres per flush.

If there are any major uses you think we've left out or if you want to talk to us about more ideas, call us on 020 8539 4707.
